Congress & UPA alliance headed by confident Sonia call for t

The steadfast decision of the United Progressive alliance (UPA) under the auspices of Congress to go for a vote of confidence in a special session of the Lok Sabha on 21-22 July, due to the withdrawal of support by the Left parties to the government over the Indo-US nuclear deal on 9 July, speaks of the inherent confidence of the reigning clique eloquently. The decision is in no way an impulsive one but has also the necessary approval of the cabinet and for that it has been urged to the President to convene a special session of Parliament to enable the government to seek a vote of confidence.

This indicates that through this the government is firm to give a fitting reply to its detractors, especially BJP and the former apparatchik associates, who are crying foul and hurling missiles at the recent acts of the government. Moreover, this bold act will be enough to make people, who are busy in questioning the government's claims that the deal is in "national interest", comprehend the reality and the need of the hour.

However, the number factor or the way to win over the majority is still perturbing the UPA, since it seems that the numbers are dwindling in spite of the intrepid stance of the government. Again, a difference of opinion is emerging among Congress regarding the break-up with Left and the alliance with timeserving Samajwadi Party. But in both these occasions Sonia Gandhi stole the show and, without any exception, emerged victorious. What is more the way she lauded the 4-year-and-two-month-long association with the Left proved her credibility.
