Time to be cautious (24-07-08)

There is no doubt that the jubilant and buoyant UPA government due to the thumping victory in the trust vote can proceed, henceforth, with more vigor towards a prolific nuclear agreement. For this reason it is set to employ a better strategy in the form of lobbying campaign among the 45-nation Nuclear Suppliers Group (NSG) for an exemption for nuclear commerce. What is more for this a horde of cabinet ministers and officials are going abroad to market the Indian standpoint and garner more votes in its favor.

Well, it is true that the endeavor of the Indian government should be lauded atop the voice and this is indeed a rare stance of the government. Till this it’s really good and we would also have been happier if all ended with this. But unfortunately to our utter dismay some questions are cropping out which, to our discretion, should be answered at the earliest. Or else it may be late for the Congress-led UPA alliance even after the yesterday’s victory!

If we accept that India will receive exemptions from the international body how will it utilize it! The bifurcation of civil and military lines or policies can be talked very easily but it’s extremely difficult to implement. What shall be the role of US in the entire episode? How long will it remain congenial or continue to advocate India in the global spectrum?

We don’t want that our worst fears should come true but if we go through the history we will find that no country entering into any agreement with America has ever prospered. This is true for any ranging from Latin America to Asia.

We want to prosper but not at the cost of our sovereignty.
